Skipper David Beckham was forced off with injury before Wayne Rooney was shown a red card for a stamp on Ricardo Carvalho in an incident fuelled further when Cristiano Ronaldo was caught winking at the Portugal dugout. Luiz Felipe Scolari's side went on to win 3-1 on penalties as England were out in the Quarter-Final stages of a major tournament for the third time in Eriksson’s tenure leading to his dismissal.
