Sven-Göran Eriksson took charge of what would be his third and final major tournament as England boss, leading the Three Lions to the Quarter-Final stages before more penalty heartbreak to Portugal. England topped Group B with wins over Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago, before a 2-2 draw with Sweden including a memorable strike from Joe Cole would set up a last-16 tie with Ecuador. A trademark Beckham free-kick secured Eriksson’s men a 1-0 win and a passageway to the Quarter-Finals where they faced Euro 2004 nemesis Portugal in a game riddled in controversy. Skipper David Beckham was forced off with injury before Wayne Rooney was shown a red card for a stamp on Ricardo Carvalho in an incident fuelled further when Cristiano Ronaldo was caught winking at the Portugal dugout. Luiz Felipe Scolari's side went on to win 3-1 on penalties as England were out in the Quarter-Final stages of a major tournament for the third time in Eriksson’s tenure leading to his dismissal.
