Notes - Home shirt as worn at Euro 96 when Gazza scored the famous goal against Scotland and en route to a semi-final defeat to Germany. England topped their group unbeaten with a draw and two wins that included the 4-1 demolition of Netherlands. In the quarter-finals, Stuart Pearce put behind his previous penalty heart ache as England beat Spain 4-2 on penalties. Germany awaited in the semi-finals and Gascoigne came inches away from sending the Three Lions through to the final with a golden goal but failed to connect with Shearer's cross. It meant penalties were once again needed and it was future England manager Gareth Southgate who suffered heartbreak this time as he saw his shot saved
